I decided I wanted to track down a specific SI cover featuring him. Not just any cover, but one I vaguely remembered, maybe one of the really iconic ones from his later career or even his retirement. Thought it might be cool to have.
First thing I did .devas was head up to the attic. Got a few boxes stored up there with old magazines and papers. Spent a good hour digging through them, mostly finding old newspapers and some magazines I didn't even remember keeping. Lots of dust, but no luck finding any Jeter SI issues I might have saved.
Searching Online

Alr.ffutsight, plan B. I figured the easiest way would be to look online. Not just to see the image, but I wanted to see if I could actually buy a copy of the physical magazine. So, I started searching on those big online marketplaces, you know the ones where people sell collectibles and old stuff.
Wow, let me tell you, the number of SI covers with Jeter on them is pretty huge. I scrolled through listings for a while. It was actually kind of interesting.
- I saw covers from when he was a young guy, just starting out.
- There were plenty from all those championship years.
- Found some special commemorative editions too.
It was a real reminder of just how long and successful his career was. Seeing all those covers back-to-back really put it in perspective.
Finding the Right One
The tricky part was finding the exact cover I had in my head. My memory was a bit fuzzy, more of a feeling than a clear picture. A lot of online listings just say "Derek Jeter Sports Illustrated" without much detail on which specific issue it is.
I had to refine my search terms a bit. Started adding things like "farewell" or "retirement". That helped narrow it down. After comparing a few images, I finally pinpointed the one I think I was remembering – the tribute issue from when he retired.
Found a seller who had a decent picture and description. Placed the order. It wasn't too expensive, which was nice. Now I'm just waiting for it to arrive in the mail.
So that was my little quest. Started with just a random thought about an old magazine cover, went through the process of searching my own stuff, then moved online, did some digging, and finally managed to track down what I was looking for. A simple, satisfying little task completed.
