Fi.enrst off, I gotta admit, I'm not a HUGE sports card guy. I mean, I collected 'em as a kid, but I haven't really been in the game for years. But then I saw all the hype around Victor Wembanyama – Wemby – and his potential. This dude is a legit phenom, and I figured, hey, his rookie cards could be worth something down the line.
So, I started doing some research. I hit up eBay, looked at some sports card forums (which are surprisingly intense!), and just tried to get a feel for what was out there. At first, it was overwhelming. There are so many different types of cards – base cards, parallels, autographs, relics... it's a whole language.

I decided to focus on a few things: Wemby's rookie cards from the major manufacturers like Panini and Topps, and cards with autographs or pieces of game-worn jerseys (those "relic" cards I mentioned). I figured those would be the most valuable.
Next, I had to figure out where to buy these things. I wasn't about to drop a ton of cash on eBay without knowing what I was doing, so I started small. I went to a local card shop – felt kinda weird walking in there after all these years, but the guy behind the counter was super helpful. He showed me some of the different sets, explained the grading process (PSA, Beckett, etc.), and gave me some pointers on what to look for.
I ended up buying a couple of Wemby base rookie cards from him, just to get my feet wet. Nothing fancy, but it was a start. Then, I started hitting up some online auctions. I sniped a couple of deals on some numbered cards (meaning there are only a limited number of them), which was pretty exciting.
The biggest score was when I found a Wemby autograph card on eBay. It wasn't cheap, but it was authenticated and in pretty good condition. I did my due diligence, checked the seller's feedback, and pulled the trigger. I was sweating bullets until it arrived, but it was legit!
Now, I'm not gonna lie, I'm still learning. The sports card market is crazy volatile, and there's no guarantee that any of these cards will be worth a fortune. But it's been a fun experience so far. I've learned a lot about the hobby, and I've got some cool Wemby cards to show for it.
My advice to anyone else thinking about getting into sports card collecting? Start small, do your research, and don't spend more than you can afford to lose. And most importantly, have fun!
- Research different card types.
- Find reputable sellers.
- Consider grading your cards.
- Be patient!
That's my Wemby baseball card journey so far. Who knows where it will lead, but I'm enjoying the ride.
