First, I did what everyone does - I hopped online and started searching around. I saw a bunch of sites where you could create a pool, join an existing one, and all that jazz. I found out that in some of these pools you pick the games straight up, and others you assign confidence points. It was a bit overwhelming at first, to be honest.
So, after browsing a little bit more, I started to understand it better. These confidence pools, they're the ones where you assign points to each game, based on how sure you are of your pick. The more points, the more confident you are. I also found some strategy guides that talked about how to play these things. Apparently, it is not all luck, but some tactics are involved in picking the games and assigning the points, just to play it smart and get ahead of others, and I thought that was really cool!
I decided to jump in and create my own pool, just a small one with my buddies. I used one of those online pool management apps, which made things pretty easy. You just set up the pool, invite your friends, and everyone makes their picks. It was super user-friendly, even for a newbie like me.
Here's how we set it up:
- Pick the Winners: For every bowl game, we had to pick who we thought would win.
- Assign Confidence Points: This is where it got interesting. We had to assign points to each game, from 1 to however many games there were. The more points, the more confident we were in our pick.
- No Point Repeats: We couldn't use the same point value twice. So, if we used 10 points on one game, we couldn't use 10 again.
Once we got the hang of it, it was a blast. We were all trash-talking each other, strategizing, and having a great time. I even did some research on the teams playing, trying to figure out the best picks. Some folks online were saying to pick some underdogs for low-point games, just to be safe. Others said to go all in on the favorites for the high-point games.
I ended up going with a mix of both strategies. I picked some favorites that I was pretty sure about for the high-point games, and then I took some calculated risks on underdogs for the lower-point ones. I mean, what's the fun in playing it safe all the time, right?
The Results
The bowl season was a rollercoaster. Some of my picks were spot on, others, well, not so much. I had the most fun because it added a whole new layer of excitement to watching the games. I wasn't just rooting for my favorite teams, I was also rooting for my picks! I'll definitely be doing this again next year. Maybe I'll even up the stakes a little. Who knows? It's all part of the fun.
